A MUSEUM STUDY SEMINAR
Join the Leo Marchutz School of Painting & Drawing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Friday, September 29th through Sunday, October 1st, 2023 for a long-weekend museum study seminar: Imagination & Form in Great Works of Art, which will draw upon art historian Lionello Venturi’s book, “Painting and Painters - How to Look at a Picture, From Giotto to Chagall.” Read on for more details and instructions on how to register.

The group will go on a deep dive into the imaginations of some of the great artists represented in the museums of Philadelphia, primarily the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Barnes Foundation. The museum seminar includes texts by renowned artists, writers, and thinkers as the group will spend extensive time discussing together what they find while taking long looks at artworks by artists such as Rembrandt, Turner, Constable, Morisot, Van Gogh, Cézanne, Monet, and others (exact artists dependent on museum availability) to discover meaning through the form of each work of art. Join in to participate in an incomparable museum experience. Texts by Lionello Venturi, Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Flannery O’Connor, Charles Baudelaire, T.S. Eliot, and others will activate discussions and help lead us into the minds of some of the most prominent artists presented in the exquisite museums of Philadelphia.

About the Artist-Educator
Alan Roberts is an artist whose studio is located at the renowned Châteaunoir, situated on the Route de Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence, where he’s been since 1977. Having studied under Leo Marchutz, Alan began teaching art history in 1982 and became Dean of the Marchutz School of Fine Arts in 1990 where he also taught drawing, painting, and aesthetics until 2020. Alan’s international exhibition record includes the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence as well as galleries in the U.S. and France. He has exhibited with such artists as Romare Bearden, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Wolfe Kahn, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, and Paul Cézanne. He has also collaborated on several important books concerning the art of Leo Marchutz and his students. Alan has a BS in Psychology from the University of South Carolina and an MFA from The Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is fluent in French and English.

Scholarship Application

Refund Policy
If a participant cancels before August 15, 2023, they will be refunded the full program fee.
If a participant cancels between August 15 and September 8, 2023 (inclusive), they will be refunded any recoverable fees, less a $250 administrative fee.
If a participant cancels after September 8, 2023, no refund will be given.
