Tradition, Imagination, and Place:

Monet, Cézanne, and Van Gogh

An Art Historical Tour through France with Alan Roberts and Hilary Stein

Join artists and educators Alan Roberts and Hilary Stein on a nine-day tour through the museums of Paris and the sites that inspired Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, and Vincent Van Gogh: Giverny, Aix-en-Provence, and Arles. Discover how these artists were inspired by specific sites to transform their art into a new vision.

Starting with an in-depth tour of some of the most prominent museums in Paris (the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and the Musée de l’Orangerie), the program will then spend time in Giverny, home of Monet’s illustrious gardens where he created his water lily (nymphéa) paintings at the end of his life.  Next, participants will travel together down to the South of France to discover the hometown of Paul Cézanne, exploring the town and surrounding areas of Aix-en-Provence, including Cézanne’s favorite subject, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. The tour will end with a day-long exploration of Van Gogh’s time in Arles and Saint-Remy, comparing his paintings to the sites where he painted them. Join us for this impactful program to walk in the footsteps of three of art history’s most renowned figures and deepen your understanding of their greatest works of art. No previous art or art history experience is necessary. Read on for more details and instructions on how to register.

About the Artists

Alan Roberts is an artist whose studio is located at the renowned Châteaunoir, situated on the Route de Cézanne in Aix-en-Provence, where he’s been since 1977. Having studied under Leo Marchutz, Alan began teaching art history in 1982 and became Dean of the Marchutz School of Fine Arts in 1990 where he also taught drawing, painting, and aesthetics until 2020. Alan’s international exhibition record includes the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence as well as galleries in the U.S. and France. He has exhibited with such artists as Romare Bearden, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Wolfe Kahn, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, and Paul Cézanne. He has also collaborated on several important books concerning the art of Leo Marchutz and his students. Alan has a BS in Psychology from the University of South Carolina and an MFA from The Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is fluent in French and English.

Born and raised in Western Colorado, Hilary Stein is an artist whose work arises out of and is formed by a deep connection to the land. She holds a BFA in Fine Arts and French from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN and an MFA from the Marchutz School in Aix-en-Provence, France where she had spent the better part of her formative years as a study abroad student, fellow, and graduate teaching assistant. She currently spends her time devoted to her painting practice, teaching workshops in her community, and farming, drawing inspiration from the raw and austere landscape of the high desert and the abundance which springs from it. Her painting is an exploration of our interrelation with the land and of our longing to belong more harmoniously with it.
